WeaK Moving towards the north of Spain, we find the Hoces del Río Duratón Natural Park , in the province of Segovia. This fascinating natural enclave, located around the meandering bed of the Duratón River, is a space of notable interest for both nature lovers and scientists in fields as varied as biology, geology and ecology. The main attraction of the park is the impressive gorges, deep gorges sculpted by river erosion over millions of years. These limestone cliffs stand like silent giants, testaments to the immense scale of geological time. For geologists, the Duratón sickles offer a glimpse of the forces that have shaped the surface of our planet, an open book in which the history of the Earth can be read . The origins of the Hoces del Duratón date back to the Jurassic Duratón river gorges Sickles of the Duratón River.

Naomi The geological study of the Hoces del Duratón allows us to interpret a fascinating history that dates back to the Mesozoic Era, specifically the Jurassic period , about 145-200 million years ago. During this period, the entire area was covered by a shallow sea, known as the Tethys Sea . The rocks that make up the impressive walls of the canyons are mainly limestone, the result of the Colombia Mobile Number List sedimentation of the remains of small marine organisms on the bed of that ancient sea. As time went by, and due to the continuous movements of the tectonic plates, the area emerged above sea level. Duratón river gorges Sickles of the Duratón River. By Juan Carlos Alonso Later, in the Upper Cretaceous, the region emerged due to the Alpine orogeny, a geological phenomenon related to the movement of tectonic plates that caused the uplift of the Cantabrian Mountains and the Pyrenees. The Duratón River then began to wear away the surface, gradually excavating the deep canyon that we know today, giving rise to the magnificent canyons and gorges that characterize the park.

One of the most interesting phenomena that we can observe in the Hoces del Duratón is karst, a relief form caused by the dissolution of certain types of rocks, such as limestone, dolomites and gypsum. This occurs due to the action of water loaded with carbon dioxide, which acts as a mild acid, capable of dissolving these types of rocks. This process has generated a multitude of geological forms such as caves, chasms, and sinkholes that can be seen throughout the park. Duratón river gorges Sickles of the Duratón River. Through fluvial erosion, the Duratón River has carved with meticulous precision the impressive walls of the canyons, evidencing the dynamics and persistence of geomorphological agents in the formation of the terrestrial relief. This has led to the formation of typical karst geological features such as caves, sinkholes and sinkholes, which are evident throughout the park. A notable example is the Cueva de los Siete Altares , a river cave formed by the erosive action of water on limestone. Cave of the Seven Altars Cave of the Seven Altars.
